White teeth give you the desire to smile more often and with more confidence. That’s why Great American Smiles offers multiple ways to brighten teeth, including professional whitening treatments. Once your teeth look beautifully bright, you’ll want to keep them that way. The good news is, this isn’t too difficult. Follow our five tips:
- Visit our office regularly for dental cleanings

- Change your brushing style
- Avoid staining substances
- Take advantage of our $99 Teeth Whitening for Life
Regular Cleanings Result in White Teeth
Plan to come to our Austin office at least twice a year for dental cleanings. Our team uses special equipment and solutions to eliminate surface stains, polish your teeth, and keep your smile looking great. We also remove plaque and bacteria from parts of your mouth that are tough to reach at home, which makes you less susceptible to cavities and gum disease. While we recommend a cleaning at least every six months, you can visit us more often to keep your teeth white.
Brush & Floss Every Day
Daily brushing and flossing are essential for keeping your mouth healthy and disease-free – and for having white teeth. These oral hygiene habits remove the surface staining that makes teeth look dingy. Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once for the best results.
Use a whitening toothpaste if you’d like. There are many good choices; we suggest looking for one with the ADA Seal of Approval. Or you can combine hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to make your own whitening paste. Simply add small amounts of peroxide to a few teaspoons of baking soda until you get a thick paste. Then:
- Brush gently for two minutes, using a soft-bristled brush
- Leave it on your teeth for a few minutes
- Rinse away all traces of the paste
Since baking soda is abrasive, don’t brush too hard. We advise not using this treatment more than once a week.
Modify Your Brushing Habits
Some people think the harder they brush, the cleaner their teeth will be. This is a very bad idea! Brushing too vigorously and/or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can damage your enamel and cause it to erode. This will make it easier to see the dentin, a yellow substance which is located between your tooth’s enamel and pulp. This discoloration can’t be corrected with whitening; it must be hidden with veneers or another dental restoration.
An electric toothbrush can make it easier to have white teeth. It applies more even and sustained pressure while brushing than a manual brush, which may remove more surface stains.
Limit Your Consumption of Staining Substances
Staining substances are the enemy of white teeth. They include such common treats as:
- Red wine
- Soy sauce
- Balsamic vinegar
If possible, avoid these substances as much as you can. Look for opportunities to make a substitution. Apple or pumpkin pie are less likely to stain teeth than blueberry or cherry pie, for example. It would be tough to completely eliminate these foods and drinks. Brush after eating if you can, or rinse your mouth out with water.
